Giant Otter – The River Giant of the Pantanal

About

Known as the giant otter, the ariranha is one of the most fascinating creatures of the Pantanal.

Extremely social and vocal, it lives in family groups and communicates with a surprising variety of sounds—a true wild chorus along the riverbanks.

Reaching up to 1.8 meters in length, it is the largest otter species in the world. Agile and intelligent, it swims with impressive ease and is an expert fish hunter, capturing prey with its nimble paws and sharp eyesight.

Despite its cute appearance, the giant otter is territorial and brave—groups are even capable of chasing away caimans to protect their young.

Watching them in action is one of the most fun and thrilling experiences on a Pantanal river safari.

With Be North Safaris, you have the chance to see these incredible swimmers up close, living freely in their natural habitat.
