Buriti (Mauritia flexuosa)

About

The Buriti is an iconic palm of the Pantanal, easily recognized by its tall crown and large fan-shaped leaves.

This plant is essential to the local ecosystem, as its nutritious fruits feed a variety of animals, from birds to mammals.

Additionally, the Buriti serves as a natural “observation tower,” providing shelter and nesting sites for birds. Its leaves are also traditionally used by local communities to make handicrafts and tools.

Found in flooded areas and along riverbanks, the Buriti is a symbol of the richness and adaptability of Pantanal flora.
