Tuiuiú – The Sentinel of the Pantanal

About

With a wingspan of nearly 3 meters and a graceful flight over the flooded landscapes, the tuiuiú is a true icon of the Pantanal — so much so that it was chosen as the region’s symbolic bird.

Also known as jabiru, its name comes from Tupi-Guarani and means “swollen neck.”

Easily recognizable, it has a white body, a black head, and a striking red band on its neck that expands when it calls or feeds.

Its large, curved bill is perfect for catching fish, crustaceans, and small aquatic animals in shallow waters.

Present across virtually all Pantanal landscapes, the tuiuiú impresses not only with its size but also with its nest: it builds enormous structures atop trees, reused year after year.

Seeing it in full flight or perched against the sunset is one of those images that remain forever in memory — and in the lens of those who visit the Pantanal with Be North Safaris.
